Here is our first blog of the year full of featured beers, news and views from your local Oxted beer shop. Firstly though thanks for all the support we have received in our first four months. It has been great meeting so many keen beer drinkers and sharing our love of great beer with you. Thanks for all the beer suggestions and feedback we have received, it is always appreciated.
In case your taste buds are feeling jaded after the festive season here are some new beers on the shelves that will get them going again:
Left Hand Milk Stout Nitro (6%)
Pouring as dark as a winters night Left Hand’s Milk Stout Nitro is a smooth stout with a wickedly creamy head when poured hard as the bottle advises. Flavours of coffee, brown sugar and vanilla combine beautifully with the subtle roast bitterness. This would have to be one of the best stouts I have ever had.
8 Wired Saison Sauvin (7.2%)
Brewed in New Zealand by a Danish brewer in the style of a Belgian / French farmhouse beer with a load of Nelson Sauvin hops this is one big bottle of beer. On tasting there is the Belgian funkiness courtesy of the yeast followed by the fruitiness of the Sauvin hop and then a dryness on the palate. Be quick on this one as we only have a limited supply.
Firestone Walker Pale 31 (4.9%)
If you are looking for some sunshine but don’t have time to hop on a plane somewhere warm get a bottle of this, take a sip, close your eyes and be transported to the warm summer sun. Brewed in and named in honour of California (The 31st state) this beer is designed to represent the terroir of California. Having never been to California I can’t vouch for that but Ruth has travelled the West Coast and agrees it is California in a bottle. All I can say is it is a crisp and floral beer with a clean finish that just leaves you wanting another sip. We also have a couple of other great Firestone Walker beers currently, check out the Union Jack for a massive hop hit or the Easy Jack for something more sessionable.
Also on the shelves now are the beers from the chaps at the Decent Brewery. Locally based in an old aircraft factory in Addlestone they brew decent beers for everyday drinking. In their own words it is “Beer that is session strength for all of us who have to get up in a morning and go to work or get the kids ready for school” Look out for Concord Pale, Propeller Pale Ale, Saint Arnold Blonde and
Black Flight, a 3.7% session stout.
Big Smoke Brew Co
Another new local brewery we have in stock is Big Smoke Brewery from Surbiton. The brewery was established in 2014 and they specialise in flavourful, punchy, additive free beers. They don’t use finings so don’t be alarmed if the beer has a haze to it. We have Electric Eye Pale (5%) and my favourite Medicine Man IPA (6%) in bottles and if you are quick enough you just might catch their Solaris Session Pale which is currently on cask and tasting very good.
Keep an eye on the website for some exciting new draught beers over the next month. We have casks arriving from Titanic brewery, Fyne Ales from Scotland, the succinctly named Bitter from the Marble brewery plus there might just be the return of the 2015 Champion beer of Britain.
One beer that I am particularly looking forward to trying is a dry hopped version of Darkstar’s Hophead. Standard Hophead is a well hopped and aromatic beer and the dry hopping should turn this up a notch. Always a popular draught beer I am sure the dry hopped version won’t last long. Look out for it soon.
Brewery of the Month
This month we are showcasing the beers from the Bristol Beer Factory, brewed funnily enough in Bristol. They first started brewing in 2004 and have gone from strength to strength. Always popular in the shop both on cask and in bottles we will have a range of their bottled beers available including:
Acer – Only 3.8% but full of powerful and zesty hop notes
Seven – A traditional best bitter with Maris Otter malt and Fuggles hops leading to a smooth bitterness
Independence – An American Pale Ale with strong hop flavour but not too much bitterness.
Hefe – A German influenced wheat beer with the traditional flavour of banana and cloves you would expect in a Hefe.
Milk Stout – An award winning stout which is creamy and full bodied.
Southville Hop – Big tropical fruit flavours from the hops are balanced with a malty back bone giving a superbly drinkable IPA.
Purchase one of each or buy 6 of your favourite in one transaction and receive 10% discount.
The sale of Camden Town Brewery to AB Inbev has led to a whole host of reactions amongst beer lovers. Some will never buy or drink Camden again, others say congratulations and what a great result for the founders. We have had a few customers jokingly ask if we are going to strip the Camden from the shelves. At the moment the answer is definitely no, we feel that as long as the quality is still present then sure, we will keep selling it. If the beer changes in the future then we will review our position.
If you have a particular favourite beer you want to stock up on or are having a party and want to order a few cases we offer 10% discount on full cases when pre-ordered. Drop us an email and we will help you out. Also while the party season of Christmas and New Year might be over we are more than happy to assist with your beer needs for weddings, social gatherings, sports clubs etc. We provide all the equipment needed and can assist with the settling and tapping if required. Delivery by arrangement is available as well.
